Could YOU get paid for being black in America?

What is the cost African Americans have paid for years of ancestral slavery? In return, America has given us injustice, segregation, prejudice and discrimination-- not to mention the grief over simply wanting to be recognized for our accolades. After 400 years, the only thing this country has to show for African Americans is 28 days of seeing Martin Luther King Jr. posters plastered everywhere you go. The suggestion has been made for the government to finally take responsibility for American history, by paying monetary compensation to all African American citizens who are direct descendants of ancestors affected by slavery. This means exactly, that the government could pay YOU for being black in America. But what does this mean for white America. With majority of the government being comprised of white people, they may take this settlement as an end all to having to recognize black history again. There is a high possibility that individual white people will view these government payouts as coming directly from their own pockets. With this mindset, it may be safe to conclude that we shouldn’t expect a decrease in any discrepancies toward us, or an increase in respect. It’s kind of like, paying off someone you were in long term debt with. After hearing them ask for their money every day, once you give it to them, you almost feel as though they shouldn’t ever ask you for anything else. Honestly, the debt society owes to African Americans can never be paid in full. We will eternally suffer emotional damage and social restraints solely because of the color of our skin, but for now, the thought of a money cushion sounds nice.
